Sabbath Controversies: Grain and Healing

12
Chapter 12
1 At that time, Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath, but his disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and eat. 2 But the Pharisees saw this and said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not permitted on the Sabbath." 3 But he said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those with him?" 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Shewbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those with him, except for the priests alone? 5 Or have you not read in the Law that on the Sabbaths the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? 6 But I say to you that one greater than the temple is here. 7 But if you had known what this means: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice," you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. 9 And after leaving there, he went into their synagogue. 10 And there was a man with a withered hand. And they questioned him, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbaths?" so that they might accuse him. 11 But he said to them, "Who among you is a man who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out?" 12 How much, therefore, does a man differ from a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbaths. 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and it was restored healthy like the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him, how they might destroy him.
